Limestone Paving Perth

Limestone has been a favourite in Perth homes for a long time, and it’s not hard to see why.

Limestone Paving Perth WA

The light suits it.

It stays cool underfoot on a hot afternoon. And it looks genuinely good in almost any outdoor setting: a backyard patio, a driveway, a pool surround.
At Garden Spec, limestone paving is one of our most requested jobs.

Our team have been working with natural stone across Perth’s western and northern suburbs for over 15 years.

We know which products hold up, what proper ground prep looks like and how to get a finish that still looks good a decade later.

What is limestone paving?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock that formed over millions of years from compressed marine organisms. That’s part of what gives it its character.

The warm, creamy tones and the natural variation from slab to slab are unique and can’t be replicated with manufactured materials.

For outdoor use, it’s cut into pavers at varying thicknesses depending on the application.

Standard patios and pool surrounds typically use 20mm pavers. Driveways and higher traffic areas usually need 30mm or more. The surface is then finished in one of several ways, each of which produces a noticeably different look and feel underfoot.

What makes limestone practical for Perth homeowners is that Western Australia has its own limestone deposits and quarrying industry.

Locally sourced WA limestone keeps material costs sensible and avoids long lead times.

It works across a wide range of different areas. Limestone can be great for alfresco areas and patios, driveways and front entries, pool surrounds and coping, garden paths and courtyards.

It suits both casual coastal settings and more formal garden designs.

Limestone colours and finishes in Perth

Choosing limestone is really two decisions, colour first then finish. Getting both right for your space makes a significant difference to the end result.

Colour

WA limestone comes in a natural palette that sits in the warm, neutral end of the spectrum. Cream and ivory are the classic choice. Thes are bright, timeless, and particularly good for pool surrounds and alfresco areas.

Beige and champagne shades have a slightly warmer, more earthy quality that works well with garden landscaping and cottage style homes.

For contemporary homes, grey and silver tones have become more popular across Perth. They work well with rendered homes, coastal properties and minimal landscaping without feeling cold.

Golden and honey toned limestone ages well outdoors and brings warmth to garden paths and feature areas that’s hard to match with other materials.

Finish

The finish determines how the surface looks, how it feels underfoot and how it performs when wet. Since Perth has a few wet winter months it’s an important factor to consider.

Honed limestone has a smooth, matte surface that looks refined and is easy to clean. Good for covered alfresco areas but it can become slippery when wet, so we’d advise our clients to steer away from it for uncovered patios or pool surrounds.

Tumbled limestone is our most common recommendation for outdoor use in Perth. The tumbling process softens and rounds the edges, giving the stone that relaxed, aged quality. The surface texture provides good grip even when wet, which makes it ideal for pool areas, garden paths and anywhere that gets regular rain.

Brushed and sandblasted finishes sit between the two. This one is more texture than honed stone, so better grip but a cleaner, more contemporary look than tumbled. They suit uncovered patios and entertaining areas quite well.

Rough-sawn and split-face finishes are on the more natural, rustic end of the spectrum. Polished limestone looks exceptional but we don’t recommend it for any wet or uncovered exterior surface.

If you’re not sure which finish suits your project, that’s exactly what we work through during the free consultation. There’s no single right answer. We come and inspect your property and see what would work best for your home.

How limestone performs in Perth’s climate

Perth’s climate is good for outdoor living but demanding on materials. Long UV exposure, very hot summers, occasional strong winds and salt air along the coast all affect how outdoor surfaces hold up.

Limestone handles our conditions well for a few reasons. The light, natural colours reflect radiant heat rather than absorbing it.

So that means on a 40 degree afternoon, limestone stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete, dark stone or ceramic tile. That matters when you have kids and pets running around a pool area, or when you’re walking out barefoot from the house.

Limestone is also UV stable. Unlike many composite and synthetic paver products that fade or discolour over time, natural limestone holds its colour.

That said, limestone is a porous stone so without sealing it will absorb stains. Pool chemicals, BBQ grease, red wine, general outdoor use, all these things will stain your stone.

A good penetrating sealer applied at installation, and reapplied every few years, makes an enormous difference. It’s something we never skip.
For properties close to the coast like Trigg, Sorrento, Scarborough and the surrounding suburbs, salt damp is worth factoring in. We use sealers suited to coastal conditions on these jobs, which stops salt from working into the pores over time.

Perth’s sandy soils also mean that sub base preparation matters more here than in many parts of the country.

Sandy ground is prone to movement and any weakness in the base eventually shows up in the paving above. We take that part of the job seriously, which is why our work holds up.

Our limestone paving installation process

A paving job is only as good as the preparation underneath it.

We’ve been doing this long enough to know where corners get cut and what that looks like a few years down the track. We don’t rush the foundational work.

Here’s how we approach every limestone paving project from start to finish.

  1. Free on-site consultation. We start with a visit to your property. We look at the space, take measurements, talk through what you’re trying to achieve and get a feel for the style and budget you’re working with. We’ll give you honest advice on which limestone grade and finish suits the application and what the installation involves. No obligation, no sales pitch.
  2. Site preparation and excavation. We excavate the area to the correct depth, which is typically 150 to 200mm for standard outdoor paving. Any existing surfaces, tree roots or debris are removed. Getting the excavation depth right from the start is what allows everything above it to work properly.
  3. Subbase compaction. A road base layer is laid and compacted using a mechanical plate compactor. This is the most important step in the whole process, and the one that most failed paving jobs have skimped on. A solid subbase is what keeps limestone flat, stable and looking good for decades.
  4. Bedding layer and drainage fall. A sand or mortar bedding layer is screeded to the correct level across the whole area. We always lay paving with a measured fall away from the house so water drains properly during Perth’s winter rains and doesn’t pool against the building.
  5. Laying the pavers. Limestone pavers are laid to the agreed pattern with consistent joint spacing. We work from string lines and levels to keep everything flat and true. Any cut pavers are done with a diamond blade saw for clean, accurate edges at the perimeter and around obstacles.
  6. Grouting and jointing. Joints are filled with a suitable jointing compound or polymeric sand, colour-matched to the stone where possible. Where mortar bedding is used, we strike all joints cleanly before the mortar sets and remove any surface residue before it hardens.
  7. Sealing. Once the installation has cured, we apply a high-quality penetrating sealer across the entire surface. This protects the paving long term. Which means it keeps staining out, makes cleaning easier and is particularly important around pool areas and at coastal properties. We advise resealing every three to five years.
  8. Handover. We clean up the site fully, walk you through how to care for your new paving and make sure you’re happy with the result before we leave.

Caring for your limestone pavers

One of the things people are often pleasantly surprised by is how little maintenance limestone takes once it’s been properly installed and sealed.

A basic routine keeps it looking good year after year.

Routine cleaning

Sweep or blow off loose debris regularly, particularly after Perth’s summer winds bring sand across outdoor areas. A quick wash down with a stone cleaner and warm water every few months is all it takes. A broom or a pressure washer on a low setting work well.

The one thing to be careful about is acidic cleaners. Vinegar, lemon juice and citrus-based products will permanently dull your new limestone and this can’t be reversed. Always check the label before using any cleaning product on natural stone.

Dealing with stains

For grease and oil from the BBQ, an alkaline degreaser or a stone poultice works well. Acting quickly before the oil works through the sealer is the most important part.

If pool chemicals splash onto the paving, rinse the area with fresh water.

Resealing

We recommend resealing every three to five years depending on use and how exposed the area is.

The water drop test tells you whether it’s time. This means pour a small amount of water onto the surface. If it beads up, the sealer is doing its job. If it soaks straight in, it’s time for a reseal.

Weed control

Polymeric jointing sand sets firm and resists washout, which significantly reduces weed growth through the joints. A pre emergent herbicide applied in late winter each year is also effective at stopping weeds from establishing before the growing season.

Questions we get asked about limestone paving

Does limestone paving need to be sealed in Perth?
Yes and in Perth conditions sealing isn’t optional. Sealing your limestone is what makes it work properly as an outdoor material. Without it the stone’s natural porosity means it will absorb stains from pool water, grease, dirt and general outdoor use.

A penetrating sealer applied straight after installation fills the pores so that liquids sit on the surface rather than soaking in. We include professional sealing in every installation and recommend resealing every three to five years.

How do you clean limestone pavers?

Routine cleaning is straightforward. All you need is a pH neutral stone cleaner, warm water and a stiff brush or low pressure washer.

The main thing to avoid is anything acidic. For specific stain types, use a product formulated for that stain on natural stone. A quick rinse after anything spills is always the best first thing to do.

Is limestone slippery when wet?

It depends on the finish. Tumbled, brushed and rough sawn limestone all provide good grip when wet and suit pool surrounds.

Honed and polished finishes can be slippery when wet, so we only recommend them for covered areas. We always inform our clients of this during the consultation.

How long does limestone paving last?

With proper installation and regular sealing, limestone paving typically holds up for 20 to 30 years or more in Perth’s climate.

It doesn’t fade, and natural stone doesn’t deteriorate the way composite or synthetic products can over time.

Can limestone pavers be used around a pool?

Limestone is one of the better choices for a Perth pool surround. The light, natural colours reflect heat rather than absorbing it, which makes a real difference to comfort underfoot on hot summer days. Tumbled and brushed finishes have the grip needed in a wet environment.

Do I need council approval for paving in Perth?

For most residential paving like patios, garden paths and backyard areas, council approval isn’t needed. If the project involves modifying the driveway crossover, the verge or the footpath, you’ll typically need to contact your local council before work starts. We can guide you through this.

Can you lay limestone over existing concrete?

Sometimes yes. If the existing concrete is in good condition and at a level that allows for the extra height, laying over the top is an option. If the slab has cracks, movement or drainage problems, those issues will eventually show through the new surface, so in those cases it’s usually better to start fresh. We assess this on site and give you a straight answer about the best approach.

What Our Paving Services Clients Say

‘Best tradie. Shane provided paving and retic services for us when we got our pool. His communication, advice and work were second to none. Shane even stepped in at the last moment shortly before Christmas when our decking plans fell through. He was able to fit us in at a crazy time of year when other tradies were no longer taking on work, so that we could have our pool area paved for Christmas with beautiful travertine. Pricing was reasonable and he did a fantastic job. Highly recommended.’
